Green Man Mythology

greenman-green-man

The Green Man is a symbol of nature, fertility, and rebirth. The Green Man's face is surrounded by leaves, vines, and other plant life, and although his origins are uncertain, it is believed that the Green Man emerged from a combination of pre-Christian and pagan traditions in Europe and the British Isles.

The Green Man is found in many cultures worldwide, and in pagan mythology the Green Man is often associated with the spring equinox, a time of renewal and rebirth.

In Celtic mythology, the Greenman is known as Cernunnos, the antlered god of the forest and animals. Cernunnos was part man, part stag and in many artworks he is often seen sitting cross-legged and of older age.

The Green Man is also found carved in stone in medieval churches throughout the UK and Europe, including St Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny in Ireland, Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland, Medieval misericord; abbey-church of Vendôme, France and Dore Abbey, Herefordshire, England.

To this day, the Green man is loved by many for his symbolism and connection to nature.
